A Valentine’s Day Story

A Valentine’s Day story in three parts.

Part 1 – It All Happened by Accident

There was blood.
And broken glass.
And crying.

We were on our way to her family’s house, dating for only a few months. I was going to meet most of her family for the first time. Her parents for the second. Three hours from a home-cooked meal we hit a deer. At 75 mph a deer will split in half. It’ll also shatter your window. The moment we walked out of the car, I knew I loved her.

Part 2 – Fatherhood

Five years later and we’re wondering how the hell we’re here, in a hospital room, about to meet our daughter. She’s moments away and we have no idea. She’s coming as fast as she can and it feels like an eternity.  And then suddenly…

I’m a father.

I’m a father.

I’m a father.

Part 3 – Nothing is Good Enough

Today. Now. I’m finishing up work and heading home to an incredible wife—my wife. A sweet daughter—my daughter. And we have no plans, no reservations. We have no wine to drink or gifts to give each other. But we do have each other. And that’s good enough for me.
